Better to go Hungary than eat Monsanto food.

Bully boys Monsanto were recently given a tap on the nose by a Hungarian flyweight.

It won’t leave them bloodied. I dare say it won’t even leave them teary eyed. More a little startled and rudely awoken from their arrogant apathy. One punch does not a boxing match make, but at least there are still a few ‘little guys’ who will not only get in the ring with one of the Dons of the Global Corporate Mafia, but they’ll climb in with arms flailing!

I love it when corporate scum get a bit of what they deserve.
Monsanto are corporate scum. They deserve a lot more than a tap on the nose by Hungarian officials, but at least someone is willing to stand up to them!

If you weren’t aware of this story, rather than botch up a summary of it, I’ll bow to the report of PlanetSave.com;

In an effort to rid the country of Monsanto’s GMO products, Hungary has stepped up the pace. This looks like its going to be another slap in the face for Monsanto. A new regulation was introduced this March which stipulates that seeds are supposed to be checked for GMO before they are introduced to the market. Unfortunately, some GMO seeds made it to the farmers without them knowing it.

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.

Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.

During their investigation, controllers have found Pioneer and Monsanto products among the seeds planted.

The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to thousands of hectares in the country.

Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds. With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this years harvest has been lost.

And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that company’s creditors, rather than the farmers.

From an article on LA Weekly, comes this extra piece of information, which demonstrates the utter contempt Monsanto has for the policies of sovereign Countries, and its unashamed arrogance;

Last week the Hungarian unit of Monsanto, the largest producer of GMO seeds, appealed to the Budapest Municipal Court to suspend the resolution by the Hungarian Agriculture Office to destroy the corn, but they were turned down, according to the Budapest Times.

[…]

Monsanto released a statement saying it “respects Hungary’s efforts to prevent the production of genetically manipulated plants on Hungarian farms. Monsanto sells only traditional, not GMO seeds to Hungary. Our seeds can only enter Hungarian markets after they were tested for GMO and found clean, in accordance with national and international laws.”

The company then suggested that, rather than it provide compensation to farmers, the Hungarian government buy up the corn seeds it “thinks” are GMO-infected. “The government has not responded,” Monsanto said.

That is because Hungary is not playing.

A big “two thumbs up” to Hungary!

Just as a footnote, the inspiration for recalling this tap on the nose for Monsanto was the chicken we’ve just devoured for the evening meal, in Budapest.

There were numerous comments regarding the physique of ‘the aforementioned bird’ and its skeletal structure. It seemed somewhat leaner – nothing like those horrendously bloated excuses for chickens you’ll pick up at Tessa Cohen’s Toxic Food Outlets throughout the UK, it’s bones didn’t mimic erectile dysfunction in desperate need of ‘father’s little blue helper’, and the meat was white – a white I can only vaguely remember from a childhood long gone.

Whilst, at first, we laughed at this somewhat gaunt offering as it was placed before the Head Chef to weave his culinary magic, at the end of the dining experience, post factum, we were singing its praises, as we licked our lips. Quite a difficult exercise in multi-tasking!

Why did this lead to a sudden jolting of the Monsanto memory? Rightly or wrongly, the conclusion we settled upon for the superior condition of the chicken was that it was not given GMO infested feed. If Hungary has a total ban on GMO seeds, then one might also be drawn to conclude that the feed or grain given to livestock would also need to comply with that general stance.

However, our conclusion is irrelevant – it was simply thrown in for some ‘colour’. The main story – the ONLY story – is that Hungary is standing strong where [supposedly] mightier oaks have capitulated.

Long may Hungary’s example to us all, continue.
